Another hard Day

Today has been a day with lots of ups and downs again. Barney has a least drunk some water on his own, with out us either feeding him crushed ice, throwing little snowballs so he will catch them in his mouth or shooting water from a water pistol in his mouth, games he loves. Except all these games are with him lying down, I feel permanently distressed.
He has had two drinks on his own, one from the water bucket in the garden and one from his bowl in the kitchen. You know things aren’t too good if you are overjoyed at seeing your dog drink water. He has had some food, a little bit of rump steak and some roast lamb, I have been through the freezer and kitchen cupboards to find something he will eat, my neighbour rummaged in her freezer and cupboards too. She gave us fish and hot dogs, this is what her dog liked when she wasn’t well. Barney did eat a little hot dog but it had to be squished not whole! His tummy is sooo upset, and this evening he is poohing blood, we have him on some tablets and paste to try and clear up his tummy. He is on more tablets for the fluid build up on his lungs and around his heart.
His breathing is a little better and I will be so glad to see our normal vet Jo in the morning. I know Jo won’t be able to do miracles but it will be good to see him for some more explaining and planning.
I am so afraid that we will need a vet over the Christmas period the call out charge is enormous and even though Barney was insured to £4000 we have already gone past this and that is with another Chemo round to go.
Barney is such a good boy and even though I know he feels rough he still wags his tail and looks up when we get up or come through the door.
I thought I would post some photos of him this time last year so he would have been about 5 months old.

I just read Barney’s blog to get caught up on it and my heart goes out to you. I have tears in my eyes thinking about the ups and downs Barney has gone through. We currently have Peyton on oral chemo right now and they gave us the option to do the chemo that Barney is on and we declined. We were very nervous about the side effects. We are hoping the best for you!

Beautiful pictures. Precious memories! Hard to believe such a tiny furball can grow to be such a big handsome boy. Best wishes, we’ll be thinking of you and Big Barney.

I just read Barney’s Blog since I mostly hang out on the forums page. I am so sorry you and he are going through this at such a young age. That just ain’t fair at all!!! It is bad enough for a young or middle-aged or old dog, but Barney is still a puppy.

There were down days when Tazzie was on Doxyrubin, but those days passed (and once we used the Cerenia to control nausea at the time of the chemo, I hardly noticed any down day, only a very slight lethargy for 1-2 days). Your troubles sound a bit more complicated. I sure hope they get sorted out soon!

Yes, that is an amazingly tiny furball in that photo!! Can that REALLY be Barney?

Wishing you lots of fun-filled days over the holidays and more to come after that!!!!

It is so tough when the pups feel so bad- I hope your vet can provide some insight or at least some comfort, and I hope Barney starts feeling better.

Ahhh, Barney is so danged cute. Love his dad, very handsome, imported from Germany? And aren’t Rottie pups the cutest in the whole world (not that I’m partial or anything…)?

Raven isn’t on chemo, but he has been on meds for his tummy that I can share with you to ask your vet about. I don’t know if the names are brand or generic:
Pepcid A/C for indigestion, acid reduction
    Sucralfate for coating the stomach/ulcers
Metoclopramide, gut motility drug to prevent ileus (slow or stopped gut motility) and helps humans with nausea in cancer chemo treatments.

These things really have helped him feel better and keep things in working order. He has maintained a great appetite and is not nauseous.

My prayers go out to you. I completely understand the Happy Dance at drinking or eating, my emotional gauge is completely dependent on Raven’s…

Come on sweet Barney Boy, hang in there and Momma will get your vet to help you feel better soon!

Barney, you are adorable. And you’re one tough pup, we know that you’ll find the strength to overcome this hurdle. Ask your mom for some stinky meats, that always helped get me to eat. And don’t forget the broth or gatorade in your water, that’s yummy too.

Many hugs going out to you Barney. We are thinking of you all.
